Best Antibacterial Bed Sheets
Antimicrobial bedding and its benefits for your skin.
Antibacterial bed sheets have taken over the bedding and beauty industry by being a revolutionary contributor to clean and bacteria-free sleep. The utilization of pure silver is the secret ingredient in the family recipe that everyone wants a piece of. It's been well-known for centuries that silver ions naturally fight off unwanted germs in hospital settings such as medical equipment. Still, in the 20th century, we took advantage of the luxury of silver in our bedrooms. Much thanks to the widespread on social media; trending on TikTok and rated a "must-have" in the skincare community on Instagram.
The benefits of silver ions in your bed linens go beyond just bacteria-free comfort. The sheets are long-lasting and require less washing than ordinary sheets due to their self-cleaning ability, making them a wise investment for your bedroom and upgraded beauty routine. Having eliminated 99%> of bacteria growth, the only thing to worry about is washing off any dust that may build up over time. During our research of the top bedding brands 2024 in the silver category, most brands recommend washing every 10-14 days compared to standard bedding that becomes a germ-fest after only one night of sleep.
Overview of the top-rated antibacterial bedding brands of 2024
Silvon
The OG of silver sheets, founded in 2015, followed by a highly successful Kickstarted campaign in 2018 where close to 5,000 backers pledged over $500K to help bring their business to life, is Silvon.
Silvon aims to offer consumers the "cleanest sheets they'll ever own." And we agree, as their bedding is woven from 93% organic cotton and 7% silver yarn. We have slept on Silvon sheets for 3 months to conclude this review, and we are pleased to say that the sheets are both durable and comfortable. Our skin has been happy and healthy throughout the three-month term as well. We especially fancy that the silver is woven into the fabric, making the silver long-lasting and eco-friendly. Our only con is the choice of fabric, cotton, for us and anyone else who is a hot sleeper. The sheets were not as temperature-regulating as we'd hoped. The best explanation we can give is "matte," so if you are enjoying matte sheets in appearance and you are a cold sleeper, these antibacterial sheets are made for you.
Edit: As of October 2024, we cannot locate Silvon's website. They have shut their website down and are now being re-directed to Walmart. We have yet to gain further insight into this update. We have also spotted distressed comments by customers placed on their Instagram page.
Derme Home
Founded in 2019 – amid the pandemic, Derme Home entered the market with a new approach, introducing organic bamboo to the silver-bedding market. Derme Home is a self-funded, small woman and veteran-owned business based out of Florida.
Derme Home is crafted with organic bamboo and silver ions. However, they have utilized a different type of technology by bonding the silver ions into the bamboo fibers on a molecular level, making the silver in the fabric highly unnoticeable and not affecting the smoothness and silkiness feeling of their fabric at all. We also fancy this method and, like Silvon, make the fabric both long-lasting and eco-friendly. We have slept on Derme Home sheets for 3 months to conclude this review, and we are pleased to say that the sheets are soft like butter and durable. No breakouts were spotted in the three-month term, and the skin has been happy and healthy. We especially enjoyed sleeping on organic bamboo, as this fabric is naturally temperature-regulating and highly breathable; it perfectly matched us hot sleepers. If you are a hot sleeper and enjoy sateen woven fabric that is buttery soft, these sheets are for you.
Our only con with Derme Home is the need for more colors and sizes available. According to their response, we noticed a typical comment on their Instagram requesting split-king, which was not on the menu for the remainder of 2024. We would like to see more colors and sizes available in 2025!
Argie
The Australian brand, founded in 2020, introduced Silver and Silk infused pillowcases to the market. In almost 4 years, Argie's has helped over 250,000 people achieve clearer, healthier skin. According to their website, the co-founders are Ben and Max, who have battled breakouts and dermatitis since they were teenagers, leading to the invention of Argie (formally known as Silvi).
Argie's silk pillowcase choice of fabric is 22 Momme 100% Mulberry silk. The silk is treated with antibacterial silver ions, reducing bacteria by 99.7%. This is an excellent choice for your hair, given the silky nature of mulberry silk. However, for anyone caring about our animals and preferring to sleep on vegan fabrics, they have added a silk version that is 100% vegan, like Derme Home; they recently added bamboo to their pillowcase inventory. We slept on Argie's pillowcase for three months and noticed a significant improvement in our hair; if you enjoy a silky surface for your hair and skin – this is the pillowcase for you. We also love the multiple colors and patterns available.
However, our biggest concern is the lack of durability of the fabric. We noticed slight piling after a couple of washes, and we also discovered that Argie's method of incorporating silver into the fabric needed to be more sustainable. Argie is "treating" their fabrics with silver; to our understanding, this is like a "dying process," as in any "dye," it will eventually deteriorate and lose its benefits. We found the following answer on their FAQ page:
How long does the silver treatment last?
Meetargie
"The treatment will be maximally effective (killing 99%+ bacteria) for at least 18 months, after which there will be a gradual decline."
This confirms our theory that silver is short-lasting and non-durable. This is unfortunate for the consumer not getting their money's worth, but even more concerning for our environment, which will suffer the consequences of silver leaking into our environment after every wash, interrupting the eco-system.
Today, Argie's products are limited to pillowcases. They introduced bedding to the US market a few years back. Still, they ran into some legal issues with a US-based competitor. Unfortunately, they had to discontinue their bedding expansion in the US. You can listen to Argies co-founder Max, who shares more via the podcast found here.
Conclusion and final recommendations
Selecting the proper antibacterial sheets for your home can significantly impact your sleep, health, and comfort. We recommend choosing a long-lasting fabric to get the most value from your investment and selecting a bedding brand that utilizes permanent technologies to incorporate silver into the fabrics, such as Silvon and Derme Home.
For those who are looking for temperature regulating sheets that enjoy the feeling of sateen, Derme Home would earn our highest recommendation. By investing in Derme Home sheets, you are investing in long-lasting benefits for your sleep and skin and supporting a small, women and veteran-owned business.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often do I need to wash my antibacterial sheets?
Most brands recommend washing every 10-14 days; however, we would recommend washing whenever you see fit. The fabric is free of germs but will still attract dust and dirt (especially if you are sleeping with pets)
Do antibacterial sheets work?
Yes, they work exceptionally well by eliminating bacteria and unwanted germs from the fabric, keeping your sleeping environment both cleaner and healthier. They work great along your skincare routine as well and are highly recommended after skincare treatments/procedures.
Are silver sheets comfortable?
Yes, very much so. In fact, in all the silver fabrics that we have tested, the silver is almost non-noticeable in most of them. Silver does not affect the fabric’s softness much or anything at all.
Do I still need to continue with my skincare routine?
Yes, you sure should. Silver sheets do not replace your skincare routine – but supplement it well!
